What is DSL or Digital Subscriber Line?

DSL is technology for bringing high-bandwidth information to customers over copper telephone lines.  DSL customers may receive data up to 3 Mb per second.  This enables continuous transmission of various types of media and faster download times compared to an ordinary modem.  DSL service is an "always on" connection.  If the computer is powered ON, then you are ONLINE.

Why do I need a different modem?

An ADSL modem will be needed to be compatible with the equipment used at Louisa Communications to provide DSL service.  Louisa Communications provides these for a discounted, one-time fee of $50.00.

What is the difference between 768K and 3M?

The only difference between 768K and 3M is the speed at which the data is transferred to You.  768K is about  15 times faster than the 56 Kbps processed by an ordinary modem, while 3M is about 60 times faster.

Why do I need an ethernet or network interface (NIC) card?

Our modems are external, so a network interface card is necessary to connect the modem to the computer.  These may be provided by Louisa Communications for only $20.00 if needed.
